How long one word stays with you

A card comes back for review when your chance of recalling it drops to about 90%.

Left alone for 270 days, the chance you will recall the word drops to 48%. With four reviews in that time, it never falls below 88%.

  • with reviews100%
  • never reviewed48%

day 270

Days since you first learned it, compressed scale
Illustrative chart: the app's own algorithm (FSRS-6, default settings), answering “Know it” every time. Your intervals depend on your answers.

Over 6,300 ready-made flashcards. With a photo, audio and an example.

Decks from the 100 most common words up to C1. Every card has IPA, a pronunciation recording, a sentence with its translation and the article in its gender colour, and almost every one has a photo. You practise each word in several ways.

  • Flip card

Try to recall it first, then turn the card and say: know it or don’t.

  • Multiple choice

Four translations, one right. Good for the start of a new deck.

  • Typed answer

Type the word with its article. A missing accent or one typo counts as “almost right”, not wrong.

  • Listen mode

The app reads a deck aloud, card by card. For listening on the go.

  • Word constructor

Splits a word into parts you already know, each with its translation.

  • Similar words

Shows words that are easy to mix up with the one on the card, with translations.

A method built on research

What the app does, and the research behind it. The numbers are from the studies, not from our app.

  • Spaced repetition

In the app: The FSRS-6 algorithm schedules each card so your chance of recalling it stays around 90%. Once it has enough of your answers, it fits itself to your memory.

What the research found: Spreading study out over time gives longer-lasting memory than the same study in one block. The meta-analysis covered 317 experiments.

Cepeda et al., Psychological Bulletin, 2006; Ye, Su & Cao, KDD, 2022 (the FSRS algorithm)

  • Recall, not re-reading

In the app: A card asks first and shows the answer only after you try: you flip, pick or type.

What the research found: Learners who kept recalling words from memory remembered about 80% a week later. Those who only re-studied remembered about 36%.

Karpicke & Roediger, Science, 2008; Roediger & Karpicke, Psychological Science, 2006

  • A picture with the word

In the app: Almost every card in the ready-made decks has a photo that shows what the word means.

What the research found: Words that are easy to picture are remembered better than abstract ones: they are stored as a word and as an image.

Paivio, Canadian Journal of Psychology, 1991

  • Feedback straight away

In the app: After every answer you see the correct form. The AI assistant explains a mistake in plain English, mid-exercise.

What the research found: Feedback is among the strongest influences on achievement: an average effect of 0.79 across 12 meta-analyses (196 studies).

Hattie & Timperley, Review of Educational Research, 2007

  • Minimal pairs

In the app: The listening module trains you to tell apart words that differ by one sound, like dessus and dessous or rue and roue.

What the research found: Training on minimal pairs improved adults’ recognition of sounds that do not exist in their first language.

Logan, Lively & Pisoni, Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 1991

What a textbook can't do

AI assistantduring gender practice

Why is “problème” masculine? It ends in -e!

Nouns ending in -ème are usually masculine: le problème, le système, le thème.

A common exception is la crème. Words in -ème that come from Greek are almost always masculine.

A sample conversation.
  • Doesn't know when you forget.

Brings each card back before it slips.

  • Gives everyone the same exercises.

What you get wrong comes back more often. What you know, less often.

  • Can't tell you why.

The AI assistant explains the mistake in English, mid-exercise.

  • Has no sound.

Meet the founder

Klaudia Kromołowska, founder of Français Flow

I'm a software engineer. I've been learning French for three years, since I joined a French-speaking team.

Preparing for the DELF B2, I was juggling five apps that knew nothing about each other, so I built one with a single review plan.

I built it for myself, and it turned out to work for other people too.

If, like me, you're tired of chaos in your learning — come give it a try :)

Common questions

Will this replace a teacher?

No. Français Flow is for studying vocabulary, grammar, listening and reading on your own. For conversation you need another person, such as a tutor on Preply or italki.

Can I import Anki decks?

Yes, with Premium. We support CSV and Anki (.apkg) imports, and imported cards join the same review schedule as everything else. Exporting your own cards to CSV is free on every plan.

How does the AI assistant work?

It runs on large language models. You ask about a mistake or a rule and it explains in English, at your level. Free accounts get 3 questions a day, Premium 50.

Is there a free plan?

Yes. It includes unlimited reviews, new items every day in flashcards, genders, conjugation, grammar and listening, 1 new reading article a day and the AI assistant. Premium removes the daily limits and adds DELF and DALF exam prep, every ready-made deck and Anki/CSV import.

Why only French?

Because French has its own hard parts: noun genders, liaison, the subjunctive. The tools in the app are built for exactly those.

How is this different from Duolingo?

Duolingo is built around points and short, repetitive exercises. Français Flow schedules reviews with the FSRS algorithm, runs every module on one plan, and has dedicated tools for genders and verb conjugation.

Can I use it on my phone?

Yes. Français Flow runs in the browser on phones, tablets and computers. A mobile app is in the works.

What level is this for?

All levels from A1 (complete beginner) to C1 (advanced), with reading texts going up to C2. Content is tagged by CEFR level and adapts to your progress. You can take a placement test to find your starting point.

Do you offer anything for teachers?

Yes. Teachers, tutors and language schools can run classes, assign homework and follow each student's progress. We switch on teacher access by hand: write us a few lines about who you teach. You can then start a 30-day trial with 10 student seats. School pricing is available on request.
